Please note that the Pittsburgh Poetry Review is now an online journal. We are also now offering contributors payment of $25 per poem.

Pittsburgh Poetry Review welcomes and encourages submissions from those underrepresented in literary journals, including women and gender non-conformists, people of color, the immigrant communities, and members of the LGBTQIA community.

Ends on December 15, 2017

Please submit 3 poems, exactly 3 poems, no more, no less, in a single .doc or .docx file.

IMPORTANT! We read blind, so please do not put any identifying info in the submission document, or the file name, but only in the “Cover Letter” portion of the form. Doing so will cause your submission to be immediately returned to you.

Simultaneous submissions are fine. Please notify us as quickly as possible if your poem is placed elsewhere but inserting a note on your submission in Submittable..

We prefer shorter (1 to 2 pages) poems, but we will consider any length with a query first. In addition, we are particularly interested in series of poems and linked poems. We are willing to publish several pieces from single poets. Collaborative work is welcome too.

ALL SUBMISSIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR PUBLICATION

While we will always have free open reading periods, we have decided to offer this special category to provide an opportunity for those of you who weren't ready to submit during the open reading period and for those of you who would like an expedited response with constructive feedback (what we liked best, what's working, what isn't, and the overall impressions our editors have of your work). Everyone receives a back issue to boot!

We have back copies of all PPR issues #1 through #6, except #3, which is sold out. We will start sending PPR #1 and move up through the issues as each becomes depleted. If you have a preference for a particular issue, please note it in your cover letter, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

PLEASE NOTE: While all submissions will be considered for publication, we do not make any promises regarding publication based on revisions and edits suggested in the feedback, though we will consider revised submissions in the next open reading currently scheduled to begin in early 2018. If you are re-submitting revised work at that time, please note this in your cover letter.

Our usual submission guidelines below still apply.

This submission period will run from November 1, 2017 to December 15, 2017. We reserve the option to end the reading period early, suspend, or extend it, depending on submission volume. Poems must be previously unpublished in print or online, including personal blogs, websites, or social media.

If your work has been published in PPR, please allow one year to pass before submitting again. You may submit to "tip jar" more than once in a period, but you must wait until your previous submission has been closed. You can only have one open submission at a time.

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST!  Since our theme is "Pittsburgh; City of Bridges, City of Poets," we are only interested in cover art submissions that are representations of a BRIDGE IN PITTSBURGH! Period. Nothing else. Please. Any submissions that don't fit this rather narrow and very specific requirement will be declined without comment. A BRIDGE in PITTSBURGH. There can be other things in the art, i.e. the area surrounding the bridge, people on the bridge, even the view FROM the bridge, but, we need the BRIDGE!

Calling all photographers and artists! We are looking for front cover art for future issues.  There is only one basic criteria (more specific requirements below): It must a photograph, drawing, painting, sculpture, or any kind of visual representation which includes a BRIDGE in PITTSBURGH, or the surrounding area. There can be other things in the art than the bridge, as long as it's clear a bridge is in there.

That's it! Outside of that, we'll consider just about anything.

All entries MUST come through Submittable. You may enter up to five pieces, but each entry must be submitted separately. Artwork should be submitted as a high-resolution .JPG, .PNG, .PDF, or .TIF and should be, at minimum, a width OR a height of 1000px.

By submitting an entry, you are agreeing to the following:

1.   You are the creator of the work.

2.   You own all rights to the work.

3.   The entry must be submitted in a hi-res .jpg format.

4.   The entry maybe in color or b&w.

5.   If the art is of a specific bridge and/or place (preferred), please cite the location and the approximate date.

6.   The artist will be cited in the online issue, and will receive $25 via PayPal. You also are agreeing to let PPR use your work on it's website and social media.

7.   If we select your work for our database of potential future covers, you are granting us permission to alter or crop the image to fit our cover dimensions.

8.   If we select your work for our database of potential future covers, it does not constitute a promise of publication.
